![]() Also known as a "bare metal restore" in some circles. There a way to set up Backblaze to back up a clone of my hard drive using a service like Super Duper?īy the way, you are using that term EXACTLY correctly: "drive clone". My understanding is that the personal backup service doesn't back up things like applications (along with their settings),Ĭorrect! The idea is that if your laptop is stolen you would buy a new laptop which comes with an OS, then you would install your particular apps from the original sources, then restore your data files from Backblaze. :-) My favorite part of that is while they pay us for voice support, they mostly never call because the products just work self serve. But with that said, some of our largest customers felt voice was "better" for some reason, we just can't quite figure out WHY it would be better. The URLs especially, we find it incredibly painful to spell out URLs with instructions through a voice call. And that failing that, we think showing screenshots and URLs is really difficult with voice. Our general impression is that customers prefer the products just completely work WITHOUT interacting with support (this is a novel concept for some businesses, but it is becoming more mainstream recently). If I wanted phone support it would be an extra $400/month?Ĭorrect! But just to ask, what advantage is voice? You can live type chat for free today (although only Monday-Friday business hours), and we have 7 day support by typed messages that aren't "live" (ZenDesk ticket system). The part that makes the job worthwhile are the thank you notes from customers that say things like, "I'm really sorry about calling you four letter words earlier, you really saved my life by getting all the data back." LOL. Our support people talk people off of ledges for a living. And then because they don't use the product very often if the SMALLEST thing goes wrong like they forgot their password (this is a problem we can help them solve), the can lose the last bit of composure they have left. (Real situation that has happened twice so far.) They are very understandably agitated and completely wrecked by stress, and their only lifeline is our product. and the child passed away two years earlier. And it gets so much worse, you could have a person here who might have just lost every photo they ever had of their child. If their laptop is stolen their day has just gotten $1,500 more expensive than they thought it would be when they woke up. ![]() The day a customer prepares a restore is not a day that is going well for that customer. I forgive her for being irritated with me initially, by the way, because we're used to this pattern. "All my edits are there, like every last one, how is this possible?!!! This is SUCH a good product." :-) She hangs up, and 5 minutes later she calls me and she is so happy. She responds meekly, "Backblaze has a mobile app?" (sigh) My own flesh and blood, who has heard me talk about backups for years, and she has no idea what the product line offers. Right there on the phone I said, "well have you signed into your Backblaze account and just checked if the paper is there?" She responds obviously irritated with me, "Haven't you been paying attention?! My laptop is dead, how would I sign in?!" I told her: "the mobile app, using the phone you are talking with me on". Silly true story: my niece (who was in college at the time) called me in a panic one time a few years ago and said her laptop was dead, and she hadn't worried about backups ever before and she wasn't even sure if Backblaze was running anymore, and she had been editing an important college paper only minutes before the laptop died. And view them, and forward them somewhere. To be clear, this does not do any backups of your phone, what it does allow you to do is browse any of the files that are normally on your laptop from your phone, because they are in your backup on our servers automatically. This is TOTALLY FREE, you can download it from the Google Play store or the Apple App store. One of the things you might also get a kick out of is our mobile client. So my advice is download it, install it, let it backup for a few days, then try a restore, see how you like it. And the good thing is the first 14 days are free, and you don't give us a credit card during the trial so we can't trick you into paying or anything. ![]() Which service I should subscribe?
